The Ottawa Senators have a pair of top prospects competing over the next week at the 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase in Minnesota. USA Hockey is hosting the showcase, which includes teams from Canada, Finland and Sweden. The event runs until August 2nd, and it's part of each country's selection process for the IIHF World Junior Championship.
Sens' 2025 first-rounder Logan Hensler (23rd overall) represented the Americans on their gold medal-winning team in Ottawa back in January, and he's back in the mix again as the Americans try to three-peat this year.
Hensler helped Team USA-White win their opener on Sunday, 5-2 over Finland. The event is conveniently being held at the University of Minnesota, just 16 miles from Hensler's hometown of Woodbury. Here's a shift-by-shift video of Hensler in action on Sunday.
Ottawa's 2024 second-rounder (39th overall), Gabriel Eliasson, is suiting up this week for Team Sweden. Eliasson played with the Barrie Colts last season, playing in 79 games, including playoffs. The 6-foot-7 is best known for his defense and snarl, generally being unpleasant to play against. He put up 137 penalty minutes in the OHL this year.
2024 Sens first-rounder Carter Yakemchuk, who was picked ahead of Elliason last season, will be a few months too old for this year's tournament, so he's not at this event, making last year's Team Canada World Junior snub sting all the more.
There are no Senators on Canada’s showcase roster, but it does feature 23 players selected in the first round of the NHL draft. Among them is winger Gavin McKenna, everybody's number one at next summer NHL's Draft. He recently committed to Penn State for the coming season.
