Don't put any money down on the Flyers winning the Stanley Cup this season.

Don't put any money down on the Flyers winning the Stanley Cup this season.

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports - Philadelphia Flyers 2023-24 Projection: 3 Keys to the Season and Worst Case Scenario

According to KEVIN, a predictive learning model created by The Hockey News' Rachel Doerrie, you probably won't want to bet on the Philadelphia Flyers winning the Stanley Cup this season.

The Metropolitan Division rankings, according to KEVIN, are as follows:

    1. Carolina Hurricanes
    2. New Jersey Devils
    3. New York Rangers
    4. Pittsburgh Penguins
    5. New York Islanders
    6. Washington Capitals
    7. Columbus Blue Jackets
    8. Philadelphia Flyers

    Philadelphia Flyers

Last year: 31-38-13, seventh in the Metropolitan Division (missed playoffs)

Projected: Eighth in the Metropolitan Division (will miss playoffs)

    Keys to the Season

    1. Sean Couturier and Cam Atkinson return to pre-injury form: Part of the reason the Flyers were so dreadful last season was their lack of offensive firepower. Losing Couturier to a back injury and Atkinson to a neck injury for the entire campaign certainly didn't do them any favors. Luckily, the two grizzled veterans are back in the saddle, and if they can produce at the same level they did prior to their respective injuries, the Flyers should get a massive boost.

    2. The kids take a big step forward: Multiple Flyers prospects are making the leap to the NHL season, and they'll be counted on to take on significant roles. Tyson Foerster and Bobby Brink will play key minutes on the wing while Egor Zamula enters the fold as a regular contributor on the blue line. Cam York will also be taking on increased responsibilities at both 5-on-5 and on the power play. This Flyers team is very young, and if they plan on competing, they'll need the young bucks to learn quickly.

    3. Carter Hart must put the team on his back: Hart was the Flyers' team MVP last season, and he'll need to continue the strong play again this year. The Flyers are thin on the back end, but potential defensive struggles can be masked by strong goaltending. If Hart plays to the level exhibited in 2022-23, he could steal a whole lot of games for the Flyers.

Most likely scenario: Flyers play competitive hockey under head coach John Tortorella and get a boost from returning veterans, but still fall short of qualifying for the postseason

Worst-case scenario: Flyers are once again hampered by the injury bug and struggle to string together competitive performances due to lack of depth, resulting in a league-worst record
