The Philadelphia Flyers checked off one of their top off-season to-do list items on June 3, signing forward Noah Cates to a four-year, $16 million contract extension. Cates certainly earned this nice new contract, as he had a strong 2024-25 season. In 78 games with the Flyers on the year, he scored a career-high 16 goals and recorded 37 points.
While getting Cates re-signed was significant for the Flyers, they still have more pending free agents who they should aim to extend. Let's discuss two of them now.
Cam York is a key Flyer who is due for his next contract. The pending restricted free agent saw mixed results this season, posting four goals, 17 points, and a minus-8 rating in 66 games. This is after the 24-year-old defenseman set career highs with 10 goals, 20 assists, and 30 points in 82 contests in 2023-24.
While York had some shaky moments this season, it is clear that the Flyers should work hard to get him signed to his next contract. The 2019 first-round pick is an important part of the Flyers' blueline and still has the potential to hit a new level with his play.
Jakob Pelletier is another pending restricted free agent who the Flyers should keep around. The 24-year-old was acquired by the Flyers in the trade that sent Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee to the Calgary Flames in January. Following the move, Pelletier had three goals and eight points in 25 games with the Flyers.
Pelletier is a promising young forward who has the tools to blossom into an impactful NHLer. With the Flyers rebuilding, they should look to sign him to a short-term deal and give him a real shot on their NHL roster next season. He has the potential to be a pleasant surprise for the Flyers, as there is no question that he is skilled.
Flyers Soaring Forward Should Hit New Level Next Season
The Philadelphia Flyers made a notable move on May 30, signing forward Tyson Foerster to a two-year, $7.5 million contract extension. Foerster was one of the Flyers' top pending restricted free agents heading into the summer, but they worked quickly to get him signed to this solid bridge deal.
