The Flyers took on the Seattle Kraken in their second of a three-game home stand, and nabbed a very entertaining win while they were at it. There were plenty of accomplishments to speak of—Morgan Frost's 200th NHL game, the Flyers showing the strength of their penalty kill, Cal Petersen easing some anxieties around his abilities to be at the NHL level—but, as always, there's three big things to think about coming out of this 3-2 win.
With his second shorthanded goal in as many games, Ryan Poehling brought the Flyers' overall shorthanded goal tally to 12, which officially leads the league.
They're currently ranked second in the league for their overall penalty kill, an impressive 85.7%.
In his first start since November 11, Cal Petersen quieted many of the doubts fans might have had about him. No one was sure how he would perform tonight—his AHL numbers haven't been great this season, and he's only appeared in three games prior to Feb. 10. The Kraken certainly tested Petersen, but he was up for the challenge.
Petersen made several key blocks, and showed impressive levels of awareness and alertness against a Kraken team that was coming at him in waves. It's going to take more games to truly gauge whether Petersen has what it takes to stay in as Ersson's backup, but his performance against Seattle has gotten him off on the right foot.
The Flyers haven't played a consistent 60-minute game in their last couple of outings, but their outing against the Kraken was a different story. Although the Kraken were able to tie things up twice, the Flyers were always able to respond, and they ended up with their third-straight win.
Sean Couturier mentioned how head coach John Tortorella gave him "an earful" on the bench before he went out and scored the crucial third goal that sealed the Flyers' victory. Tortorella said he did indeed have words for Couturier, but only out of the immense amount of respect he has for the "crusty old pro."
"He's not allowed to have a bad night or take a night off," Tortorella said. "He's not allowed. We're just not good enough for him to be average."
The Flyers will take to the Wells Fargo Center ice again against the Arizona Coyotes on Feb. 12 at 7 pm EST.
