Weeks after the hiring of Danny Briere as general manager and Keith Jones as president of hockey operations, the Philadelphia Flyers have made a few more notable changes to their front office.
Friday morning, the Flyers elevated three members of their staff to new roles, promoting Alyn McCauley to assistant general manager, Riley Armstrong to director of player development, and Nick Schultz to assistant director of player development.
The club also announced the dismissal of Mike O’Connell, John Riley, and Kjell Samuelsson.
"I'm excited to announce the promotions of Alyn, Riley and Nick," Briere said in a statement released by the Flyers. "These three have been around the organization for some time, in particularly, with our current prospects and young players, so I know they will each provide the direction and leadership that is necessary to get our future assets to the NHL level.
McCauley, 46, originally joined the Flyers as a pro scout in 2017, and was elevated to director of player personnel in 2022. McCauley played nine seasons in the NHL — six with the Toronto Maple Leafs, three with the San Jose Sharks, and one with the Los Angeles Kings.
Armstrong, 38, also played in the NHL, but only for a pair of games with the Sharks in 2008. Armstrong has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach for the Flyers' AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He was also named the first head coach in the history of the ECHL's Maine Mariners while Briere was serving as the team's president. Armstrong was eventually promoted to work alongside Briere as the club's assistant general manager.
And, of course, most Flyers fans should be quite familiar with Schultz. Schultz, 40, played 15 seasons in the NHL, including three with the Flyers. He logged three goals and 29 total points in 189 games with the Flyers before closing out his playing career after the 2016-17 season. The Flyers hired him to serve as a player development coach in 2019.
The Flyers have completely overhauled their front office since the termination of Chuck Fletcher as general manager and president of hockey operations in March. And now, McCauley, Armstrong, and Schultz — longtime staffers within the organization — will each have enhanced roles as the Flyers begin their rebuild.
