The Flyers have reduced their roster by five players after their rough preseason opener in Newark.
Less than 24 hours after being routed in their preseason opener against the New Jersey Devils, the Philadelphia Flyers made their first round of training camp cuts.
Tuesday evening, the Flyers announced forward Jonathan Fauchon and defenseman Sam Sedley were released from their camp invites. The Flyers also loaned forward Denver Barkey and defensemen Carter Sotheran and Oliver Bonk to their respective junior clubs.
The Flyers' roster now sits at 52 players.
None of the players cut from the roster were expected to make the Flyers out of camp, but Barkey, Sotheran and Bonk's names stand out among the group. Each of them were selected in this year's draft. Bonk, of course, was selected with the No. 22 overall pick.
Barkey particularly stood out in the Flyers' two exhibition tilts against the New York Rangers during rookie camp. In Game 1, he redirected a Bobby Brink wrister to create a juicy rebound that led to a Matt Brown tally. In Game 2, he set up Zayde Wisdom with a nice feed for the Flyers' only goal of the tilt.
"He looks like he's 12 years old. It's funny to me. But he's a smart player, he skates well," Lehigh Valley Phantoms head coach Ian Laperriere told the media after the Flyers' second rookie game against the Rangers.
"I felt like Barkey played really well for his size. He's still young, but very poised with the puck. He's got a bright future."
Bonk will join Barkey in Ontario to return to the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. Sotheran, meanwhile, will return to the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League, where he logged 23 points in 68 games last season.
The Flyers will take on the New York Islanders in their second preseason game Wednesday night at UBS Arena. Puck drops at 7 p.m. ET.
