Hours after announcing the signing of Noah Cates to a two-year contract, another of the Philadelphia Flyers’ top young players inked a new deal.
Defenseman Cam York signed a two-year, $3.2 million contract with an average annual value of $1.6 million, the Flyers announced Monday afternoon. York became a restricted free agent on July 1.
The Flyers selected York in the first round (No. 14 overall) of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. He posted two goals and 20 points in 54 games with the Flyers last season. In total, he’s logged five goals and 30 points in 87 NHL games.
York’s 2022-23 season didn’t get off to the most ideal start. He was widely expected to make the Flyers out of training camp last fall, but surprisingly was sent down to Lehigh Valley, where he spent the first two months of the season. He finally made his season debut with the Flyers in early December, and from that point on, he became a mainstay on the blue line and a regular on the power play. He even ranked second out of all Flyers skaters (minimum 400 minutes of 5-on-5 ice time) with an excellent 53.48 Expected Goals For percentage.
With Ivan Provorov and Justin Braun already out of the fold, York is expected to play a significant role as a top-four defenseman for the Flyers next season.
With York, Cates, and defenseman Ronnie Attard all under contract, forwards Morgan Frost and Olle Lycksell are the Flyers' only remaining restricted free agents in need of new deals.
