Carlsson will not become a Flyers player.
It was a good run and an exciting week, but the Anaheim Ducks have officially matched the offer sheet the Philadelphia Flyers signed Leo Carlsson to on Friday.
Carlsson, 21, will remain a Ducks player for five more years by terms of the Flyers' offer sheet, costing Anaheim an astounding $18 million against the salary cap, earning north of $38 million of signing bonuses in the first two years, and having a full no-move clause in the last year of the deal.
With the saga now over, the Flyers will need to pivot and take care of some of their own business; Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale filed for arbitration, and Nikita Grebenkin remains a restricted free agent, too.
The Flyers have $29.5 million cap space to work with at the time of this writing, which leaves them plenty to tidy up in-house before moving to external signings and trades, which will assuredly include alternatives to Carlsson now that the dream has been dashed.
"We have viewed Leo as a franchise player since the moment we met him prior to the 2023 draft. He’s a character person on and off the ice. Leo is viewed as a top player in this league, and it was always our intention to match any offer sheet," Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek said in a statement.
Added owners Henry and Susan Samueli: "We have extremely high expectations for Leo. We firmly believe he will continue his strong growth trajectory and become one of the truly elite centers in the league, while continuing to make a strong impact in our community."
