This potential Flyers center option is no longer a possibility.

One of the Philadelphia Flyers' top objectives this off-season should be to improve at the center position. They should be looking to bring in a new top-six center specifically.

However, this year's top potential free-agent center option is now officially off the board. This is because Charlie Coyle has signed a six-year, $36 million contract extension with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Coyle was entering the summer as arguably the best center who could have hit the free-agent market on July 1. Due to this, he could have been a player that the Flyers at least considered pursuing. Yet, with this move, Coyle will be staying put in Columbus.

Coyle earning this long-term deal with the Blue Jackets comes after he had a strong 2025-26 season. In 82 games with the Blue Jackets, he recorded 20 goals, 38 assists, 58 points, and a plus-3 rating. He was also a key contributor on both their power play and penalty kill, so he emerged as a major part of their roster.

If the Flyers hope to improve down the middle this off-season, their best path to doing so is through the trade market. That may be for the best, as the 34-year-old Coyle's new long-term contract with the Blue Jackets comes with some real risk.
