Hathaway gives the Flyers another gritty forward to add to the lineup.

The Philadelphia Flyers didn't make any big splashes on the first day of free agency, but they did add a notable checking line winger to the roster.

Saturday night, the Flyers signed gritty forward Garnet Hathaway to a two-year contract worth $2.375 million annually.

Hathaway, 31, played 59 games for the Washington Capitals last season before being dealt to the Boston Bruins at the trade deadline. In total, Hathaway posted 13 goals and 22 points in 84 regular-season games.

Hathaway is a physical, gritty winger who plays a stereotypical brand of Flyers hockey. He logged a whopping 268 hits last season between the Capitals and Bruins and amassed a total of 69 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-3, 208-pounder gives the Flyers yet another tough winger to serve as a relentless forechecker in the bottom six. He is likely to earn some reps on the penalty kill as well.

With Nic Deslauriers and Wade Allison already in the fold, the Flyers will ice some serious muscle while their top scorers visit the bench for a breather.
