The Philadelphia Flyers are back at the Wells Fargo Center again tonight to face off against the Dallas Stars, one of the NHL's most complete teams.

Despite some tough results recently, the Flyers have played with energy and confidence, signaling a team that is growing and capable of competing against strong opponents.

Sam Ersson Is Back in Net

Head coach John Tortorella confirmed that Sam Ersson will start tonight, marking a significant moment for the young netminder. After an injury scare against the San Jose Sharks on New Year's Eve, Ersson’s return carries a sense of anticipation—not just for his individual performance but for what his presence means to the team.

Tortorella has emphasized that Ersson is healthy, noting that "he would not be playing if the trainers hadn't cleared him." As the undisputed starter for the Flyers when he's available, Tortorella also highlighted that the team doesn't fear that the 24-year-old is "injury-prone," given that the ones he's unfortunately dealt with season are the first he's had to deal with in years.

It's quite comforting to hear, consider that this season was meant to be a pivotal one for Ersson, giving him the chance to solidify himself as the team’s No. 1 goaltender. His absence was a setback, but his return could bring much-needed stability in net.

Tonight is also a test of Ersson’s readiness. The Dallas Stars boast a potent offensive lineup, led by Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz, and they excel at creating chaos in front of the net. Ersson’s ability to track pucks, control rebounds, and stay composed under pressure will be crucial in keeping the Flyers in the game.

Matvei Michkov's Impact Beyond the Scoresheet

Matvei Michkov has been a noticeable presence for the Flyers lately, even if his name hasn’t consistently shown up on the scoresheet. Tortorella spoke highly of Michkov’s play, noting that the 20-year-old forward has been finding ways to contribute creatively and effectively despite not piling up points.

"He probably had one of his better games in over a month [during the Flyers' Jan. 7 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs], [but] gets nothing," Tortorella said. "He was involved; his legs were there...And that is gonna happen. I'm gonna tell you right now, the second half of the year, it's going to happen. [We] are certainly going to be cognizant of how we can help him in that way."

Michkov’s ability to read the game and create opportunities for his linemates has been evident in recent performances. He’s demonstrated poise with the puck, a willingness to engage physically when needed, and an unrelenting drive to make something happen every time he’s on the ice.

While the Flyers would undoubtedly benefit from Michkov converting some of those chances into goals or assists, his presence alone is indicative of a larger truth: he’s an impactful player who is only going to get better. Against a disciplined Stars team, Michkov’s creativity could be key in unlocking scoring opportunities.

Playing Assertively, But Just Need to Finish

The Flyers’ recent results haven’t been ideal, but their performances tell a more nuanced story. This is a team that has consistently played with energy, resilience, and belief in itself, even against tough opponents like the Maple Leafs and Golden Knights.

What’s held them back? Execution. Tortorella has pointed to small details, such as the inability to finish scoring chances, as the difference between winning and losing these tight games. But those are correctable issues, not signs of a fundamental problem.

The Flyers know they can keep up with any team in the league, including the Stars, who bring a balanced attack and strong defensive play. If the Flyers can capitalize on the scoring opportunities they generate, they have every reason to believe they can come out on top tonight.
