The Philadelphia Flyers have officially named forward Garrett Wilson as their nominee for the 2026 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
Presented annually, the Masterton Trophy is awarded to the NHL player "who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey."
Wilson’s path back to the NHL makes him a deeply fitting candidate.
He began his journey in 2011, when he signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers, bouncing between the NHL and AHL. He would do the same after joining the Pittsburgh Penguins organization in 2016, spending most of his time with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, being named captain of the team in the 2018-19 season.
He also spent a brief stint with the Toronto Marlies in 2019 before signing with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in January 2021.
But after nearly seven years away from the league—his last appearance coming in April 2019 as a member of the Penguins—Wilson did not drift from the game.
Since 2023, he has served as captain of the Phantoms, embodying leadership through consistency, accountability, and resilience. In March 2026, that commitment was rewarded when he signed a two-way contract with the Flyers and earned his return to the NHL.
There is no shortcut to that kind of return. It is built instead over years, through long bus rides and pandemics, leadership responsibilities and the unglamorous work of staying ready without guarantee.
That is precisely why Wilson represents the spirit of the Masterton nomination.
He exemplified leadership and endurance in his time in the AHL. By the time his opportunity came again, he was and remains prepared to contribute and to honor the game in the way the award intends.
In a league driven by speed and spotlight, Wilson’s story is a reminder that perseverance often unfolds far from both, and that, when recognized, it resonates just as powerfully.
