A longtime Philadelphia Flyers fan favorite is about to get his due.
Mark Recchi, who played for the Flyers for parts of 10 seasons, is set to be inducted into the Flyers Hall of Fame, the team announced Thursday. A special pregame ceremony will be held on Saturday, January 27 when the Flyers take on the Boston Bruins — one of Recchi's seven former teams.
"This is a tremendous honor and one I was not expecting to get the call for," said Recchi in a statement released by the Flyers. "My time in Philadelphia meant a lot, still means a lot to me and I am very thankful to be the next inductee into the Flyers Hall of Fame. Thank you to Dan, Keith and the nomination and voting committees for this opportunity. I look forward to sharing this memory with my family, the fans, fellow Flyers Alumni and the entire Flyers organization."
Recchi was selected in the fourth round of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins before being traded to the Flyers in 1992. The Flyers wound up trading Recchi as well when they shipped him to the Montreal Canadiens in 1995, but they reacquired him in March of 1999.
As a Flyer, Recchi posted 232 goals and 627 points in 602 games. Overall, he logged a total of 577 goals and 1,533 points in a whopping 1,652 games over his 22-year NHL career. He played a key role on three Stanley Cup-winning teams, including the 1991 Penguins, 2006 Carolina Hurricanes and 2011 Bruins. He also won Stanley Cups as a development coach with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017.
"As a teammate of Mark's, I can ensure that no one deserves this exclusive honor more than him," said Flyers president of hockey operations Keith Jones. "January 27 will be an outstanding day for our franchise and for Mark and his family as we celebrate all his Flyers accomplishments."
