Philadelphia Flyers vs Washington Capitals: Game Preview & Predictions

Flyers vs Capitals Predictions and preview for December 14th, 2023.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports - Philadelphia Flyers vs Washington Capitals: Game Preview & PredictionsGeoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports - Philadelphia Flyers vs Washington Capitals: Game Preview & Predictions

The Philadelphia Flyers are looking to get back into the win column tonight against the Washington Capitals. They lost their last game 3-2 to the Nashville Predators in overtime on Tuesday night. Tonight is the first of three meetings between the two teams this season.

The Flyers return home where they are 6-6-1 this season. The Capitals are 6-4-1 while on the road. They have played three less games than the Flyers, with only two less points.

    Keys to the Game

Perhaps the biggest story going on with the Capitals this year is Alex Ovechkin's incredibly low goal total. The superstar goal-scorer only has five goals in 25 games this year. Last season Ovechkin already had 13 goals after 25 games. Whatever ails Ovechkin this year, the Flyers do not want to be the remedy.

Highlighting Ovechkin's struggles are the Capitals struggles on the power play. Typicallly a top-10 team in terms of power play percentage, the Capitals are dead last in the league - only converting on 8.2% of their opportunities.

The Flyers will need to stay disciplined to not allow the Capitals to gain any moment with their power play. The Flyers penalty kill is the fourth best in the league, killing off 86.7% of the power play opportunities afforded to their opponents.

    Game Predictions

    • First Goal: Garnet Hathaway
    • Most Ice Time: Travis Sanheim (25 minutes)
    • Most Shots: Alexander Ovechkin (4)
    • Most Hits: Garnet Hathaway (4)
    • Final Score: 3-1 Flyers

Game starts at 7 PM Eastern Standard Time.
