If the Philadelphia Flyers were to acquire Johnny Gaudreau, here's how the forward lines could shake out.
Two weekends ago there was talk that the Columbus Blue Jackets are willing to listen to trade offers on "just about everyone". Some Philadelphia Flyers fans got giddy at the thought of acquiring forward Johnny Gaudreau.
Before Gaudreau signed with the Blue Jackets there was talk that he wanted to sign close to home. Given the proximity of Salem County to Philadelphia, it seemed like the Flyers were on the shortlist.
Regardless of what could have happened then, does bringing Gaudreau make sense for the Flyers? If the answer is yes, where would he fit in? That's what I will explore in this piece.
Johnny Gaudreau In, Bobby Brink Out
The first question that needs to be answered is which player would get pulled out of the lineup to sit in the press box? Obviously when you have a player of Gaudreau's calibre enter your organization the first instinct is not to scratch that player.
The Flyers have a few rookies who are potential candidates to be replaced with Gaudreau. Tyson Foerster and Bobby Brink are both young players with less than 80 games of NHL experience. Given Foerster's deployment on the top line, he is less likely to be scratched than Brink. Both players have been played in offensive roles and play in the team's top six.
A few other potential scratches could be Nicolas Deslauriers or Joel Farabee. Deslauriers is a depth forward for the Flyers and could easily slide out in favor of more offensive punch being added. Farabee is also someone who hasn't always been in the good books of John Tortorella.
Tortorella likes his role players, so upsetting his bottom six seems less likely than taking out a player similar to Gaudreau. In light of that, Brink feels like the most likely player to get taken out.
Philadelphia Flyers Top Six & Power play
Given Gaudreau's reputation as an offensively gifted player and playmaker, having him in the top six makes the most sense. If Brink is the player being removed then there are two realistic options for him.
Option 1:
Tippett - Frost - Gaudreau
This deployment makes the most sense to start. Gaudreau replaces Brink and the chemistry that the top line has created isn't broken by adding a new player into the mix.
Owen Tippett and Morgan Frost benefit from having a veteran player on their line who can mentor them. It's also beneficial for Gaudreau as his playmaking abilities can compliment Tippett's shooting mentality.
Option 2:
Gaudreau - Couturier - Konecny
The second option would see Sean Couturier and Travis Konecny become the linemates of Gaudreau. Couturier would be the defensive backbone of this combination, which could give Konecny and Gaudreau more freedom.
It also would afford Gaudreau some time to acclimate to Tortorella's systems and expectations - all the while playing with the team's two best players.
Power Play Unit 1:
Konecny - Couturier - Gaudreau - Ristolainen - Foerster
Replacing Frost with Gaudreau allows Frost to move down to the second unit power play. It gives the opportunity for Couturier and Konecny to continue building chemistry with Gaudreau. It also puts him in the best situation to succeed.
If the Flyers pick up a veteran like Gaudreau before the trade deadline, it would give the team a huge offensive boost. Likely resulting in him playing on one of the top two lines and top power play unit.
