The Pittsburgh Penguins are currently retooling their roster as they look to become a playoff team again. Because of this, the Metropolitan Division club will be hoping that some of their young players will take a notable step forward in their development next season.
Thankfully, the Penguins have some clear breakout candidates heading into next season. Due to this, let's discuss two Penguins prospects who can hit new levels for the NHL squad in 2025-26 now.
Rutger McGroarty
Rutger McGroarty is undoubtedly a young player who can break out for Pittsburgh next season. The 21-year-old forward just completed his first professional season and certainly showed promise. The Lincoln, Nebraska native spent the bulk of the campaign in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, posting 14 goals and 39 points in 60 games. He also had three points in eight games with Pittsburgh this campaign.
McGroarty is Pittsburgh's top prospect and has all the tools to blossom into a top-six forward at the NHL level. Due to this, it would not be surprising if the 2022 first-round pick breaks out next year.
Ville Koivunen
Ville Koivunen is another exciting Penguins prospect who could become a key part of their forward group next season. The 21-year-old had a fantastic season down in the AHL with Wilke-Barre/Scranton, as he had 21 goals and 56 points in 63 games. He also impressed big time when given the chances to play for Pittsburgh, recording seven assists in eight games.
It is hard not to feel optimistic about Koivunen's future in Pittsburgh. He had an incredible 2023-24 season, and it would be shocking if he does not get more chances on the NHL roster next season because of it.
