Analysts continue to double down on saying Sidney Crosby wants to leave the Pittsburgh Penguins.
PITTSBURGH – Despite the likelihood that the Pittsburgh Penguins will sign Sidney Crosby to a contract extension the first chance they get this summer, pundits still want to discuss his departure from the organization. TSN jumped in on the conversation when they saw Crosby’s comments on Jake Guentzel being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes.
In part of a postgame interview, Crosby said Guentzel was his friend, and it was a privilege to play on the Penguins with him but he didn’t have a comment when asked about management. Former NHL netminder turned analyst Martin Biron says this is enough for him to think there’s a chance Crosby leaves Pittsburgh.
“Before today, I was 100% sure he was never going to leave Pittsburgh in his career,” Biron said. “Now I’m looking at there’s a 50% chance and maybe even on the decline.”
Biron discussed how the new management and ownership group might want to take the team in a new direction as early as next season.
“The direction that Pittsburgh has taken,” Biron said. “A new ownership group, new general manager, new everything. This does not bode well.”
Biron may not know that both Fenway Sports Group and Kyle Dubas have expressed great interest in keeping Crosby in the fold until he retires. On multiple occasions, those two entities have stated it’s in their best interest to keep Crosby as the leader of the Penguins and bring him and the rest of the core another Stanley Cup.
“Sidney Crosby is a player on the team,” Biron said. “And a player that doesn’t seem to like the direction the team is going in.”
Crosby himself has said before he’s never leaving Pittsburgh, no matter how choppy the waters get. Rob Rossi of the Athletic has said that come July 1 this summer, he’ll sign a contract extension and hopefully finally put an end to this nonsensical debate.
