With the Pittsburgh Penguins retooling, there has been plenty of chatter about them potentially selling off notable pieces of their roster. However, based on a recent report, they were also open to making a significant addition to their group in free agency.
During a video appearance on Bleacher Report, NHL insider Frank Seravalli revealed that the Penguins were one of the teams interested in star forward Brock Boeser before he decided to re-sign with the Vancouver Canucks.
"Brock Boeser had eight to 10 lined up," Seravalli said. "I heard one of the teams, oddly enough, interested to get a chance at Brock Boeser was the Pittsburgh Penguins."
While some certainly could be surprised by the Penguins being interested in Boeser before he went back to the Canucks, it also would have been a major move for Pittsburgh if it was pulled off. This is because Boeser is a legitimate top-six winger who is an impactful scorer and right in his prime. Thus, he would have had the potential to be a long-term part of the Penguins' core if they ended up signing him.
Boeser appeared in 75 games this past season with the Canucks, where he posted 25 goals and 50 points. During the season before, he set career highs with 40 goals and 73 points in 81 games. With this, he would been a big-time pickup for the Penguins, but alas, he will be staying put in Vancouver for a long time with his new deal.
