A former Pittsburgh Penguins superstar could be traded before hitting free agency.

PITTSBURGH – When free agency opens at the start of July, it seems pretty likely former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel will sign with his third NHL franchise. The Penguins traded the 40-goal scorer at the deadline to the Carolina Hurricanes who are now reportedly shopping him before free agency opens.

According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the Hurricanes are willing to send Guentzel’s signing rights somewhere in exchange for a draft pick.

“I believe Carolina has let everybody know that if you want to trade for his rights,” Friedman said. “It’s possible for a mid-round pick.”

The Hurricanes acquired Guentzel by sending Michael Bunting, a trio of prospects, and a second-round draft pick to the Penguins. Guentzel and the Hurricanes always stated they would like their relationship to continue, but it seems increasingly likely he will find a new team sooner or later.

In 17 regular season games with the Hurricanes, Guentzel scored seven goals and 17 assists for 25 total points. In two rounds of the playoffs, Guentzel picked up nine points in 11 games.

The Hurricanes recently began the search for a new general manager as Don Waddell left for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
