The Edmonton Oilers are interested in a trade for the Pittsburgh Penguins star.

PITTSBURGH – The NHL trade deadline is officially under a month away, and the Pittsburgh Penguins still hold one of the biggest names to possibly hit the market. Jake Guentzel has been a hot topic for several teams, but it’s still up to the Penguins to decide on his future.

At last check, no contract talks have been made with Guentzel, and the Penguins have yet to make him available for trade discussions. That hasn’t stopped teams from putting Guentzel on their list of targets.

The latest team to have some legitimate interest in Guentzel is the Edmonton Oilers. Pierre LeBrun said on TSN’s Insider Trading that the Oilers are in the hunt for top-six scoring, and Guentzel is someone they have an eye on.

“Their top priority, to our understanding, is to add a top-six forward,” LeBrun said. “We mentioned Jake Guentzel as a real splashy name. I think he remains on their list. But who knows if he’s even available.”

Currently, Guentzel is still unavailable to teams, and the Penguins are looking to utilize him as they push for a playoff spot. The Penguins are still a handful of points out from reaching the wild card, but they’ll need a player like Guentzel to keep them climbing the ladder.

On the other hand, the Oilers just saw their 16-game winning streak snap before it could reach the record of 17 set by the 1992-93 Penguins. They signed Corey Perry as a free agent last month and are seeing growth on the blue line and between the pipes, but they would like a new winger for Leon Draisaitl.

In a recent poll, the Oilers were chosen as the most likely destination if Guentzel does leave Pittsburgh.

The Vancouver Canucks were a team who may have been sniffing around for Guentzel, but they snagged one of the biggest trade targets available in Elias Lindholm. That doesn’t take them out of the running for another big swing, but it does make it far less likely.

The Penguins are yet to decide on Guentzel’s future, but as their excellent stretch of games continues, it’s more and more likely he will stick around.
