With it now being multiple days after July 1, most of this year's top unrestricted free agents (UFAs) have found their new homes. While this is the case, there are still some solid players available who should get signed before the start of the campaign.

When looking at the UFAs left, there is no question that former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk is easily the top blueliner still remaining.

It is a bit surprising that Grzelcyk is still without a new home now that free agency has been open for a few days. This is especially so when noting that the 31-year-old just had a solid offensive season with the Penguins in 2024-25. In 82 games, he scored one goal and set new career highs with 39 assists and 40 points. With offense like this, he could be a decent pickup for a team looking for more production from the point.

It should only be a matter of time before Grzelcyk lands his next contract, as he is a solid bottom-pairing defenseman who works on the power play and has plenty of playoff experience. Thus, it would not be particularly surprising if he landed a new deal soon with an NHL club, even if it is just a one-year, prove-it deal.

It will be fascinating to see where Grzelcyk ends up going from here. Teams needing more defensive depth should be calling.

Because of this and the 2025 unrestricted free agent (UFA) class being far weaker than in most years, the expectation is that the trade market will start to heat up.
