It seems Fenway Sports Group will waste no time in making changes to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have seen their 2022-23 season come to an end, and for the first time since 2006, they will not be competing for the Stanley Cup.
It was a season full of not reaching expectations and missed opportunities on the Penguins part, and fans are looking for a number of changes.
Fans might not have to wait long for their requests to be fulfilled.
According to Elliotte Friedman on the Jeff Marek Show, Fenway Sports Group isn’t afraid to make changes and will look to make them quickly.
The biggest request from Penguins’ fans is that FSG begins the search for new front office staff relieving Ron Hextall and Brian Burke of their duties.
On multiple occasions this season, ‘fire Hextall’ chants broke out at PPG Paints Arena (even a small one at Nationwide Arena) and they weren’t without reason.
Hextall has made a mess of the Penguins’ roster over the last couple of seasons; it all started with the Jeff Carter contract extension that will stick around through next season.
After sitting on his hands for far too long, Hextall made trades at this past trade deadline that did nothing to help the team win.
Mikael Granlund scored a single goal in 20 games with the Penguins, while Dmitry Kulikov and Nick Bonino combined for eight games played due to injuries.
It’s unfortunate, especially for Bonino, that those two weren’t able to have a proper look in a Penguins’ uniform, but they weren’t much help in their time with the team.
While change is likely right around the corner for the Penguins front office, Friedman believes that there is more to come.
Friedman also noted that he believes the Penguins were already setting up to make changes to their approach.
“There’s been a lot of talk that they would build out their analytics department,” Friedman said.
It seems likely that the search will begin soon for a new general manager in Pittsburgh, and they might have their eyes geared toward a new way of looking at the sport of hockey.
