Will this former Penguins goalie find a new home?
Most of this year's NHL free agents have been signed now that it is September.
Although this is the case, there are still some unrestricted free agents looking for their next homes. A former Penguins goalie is among them, as Matt Murray has not been signed at this point in the off-season.
Murray still being a UFA comes after he spent last season with the Seattle Kraken organization. In five appearances last season for Seattle, the 32-year-old posted a .922 save percentage and a 2.21 goals-against average. He made his last appearance of the season in November after suffering a lower-body injury.
Given Murray's injury troubles over the last several years, it is not necessarily surprising that he is still a free agent at this point in the off-season. That remains the case even if he was effective with Seattle before suffering his injury.
Yet, with Murray having a good amount of NHL experience, the possibility of him landing a professional tryout (PTO) from an NHL team before training camps begin should not be ruled out if he wishes to continue his career. He could be a decent depth addition for a team if he earned a contract for the season.
Murray was selected by the Penguins with the 83rd overall pick of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. In 199 career games with Pittsburgh from 2015-16 to 2019-20, he posted a 117-53-19 record, a .914 save percentage, and a 2.67 goals-against average. He also helped the Penguins win two Stanley Cup championships during his time with the club.
