This former Penguins defenseman is having a strong start with his new team.

Back in March, former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta was traded to the Calgary Flames as part of the deal that sent blueliner MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth. Maatta was more of a throw-in in the trade at the time, but he has since been off to a fantastic start with the Flames.

After recording zero goals, one assist, and a minus-5 rating in 22 games with Utah this season before the trade, Maatta has been simply on fire with Calgary. In 15 games with the Flames since the move, Maatta has recorded two goals, nine assists, and 11 points.

Maatta has also been staying hot with the Flames, as he has six points in his last six games. With this, he has been impressing early on with Calgary and is proving to be a nice addition to their roster in the process.

Sometimes a player can benefit from a fresh start, and that has undoubtedly been the case with Maatta in Calgary. The former Penguins defenseman is benefiting from his increased playing time with the Flames and is showing that he can still make an impact at this stage of his career in the process.

Maatta was selected by the Penguins with the 22nd overall pick of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. In 362 games over six seasons with the Penguins from 2013-14 to 2018-19, Maatta recorded 25 goals, 82 assists, 107 points, and a plus-61 rating.
