A former Pittsburgh Penguins forward is officially hanging up the skates.
Former Penguins forward Matt Nieto announced through his Instagram account that he has retired from professional hockey.
Nieto noted that injury trouble is the reason why he has decided to retire from hockey.
Nieto spent each of his last two NHL seasons with the Penguins in 2023-24 and 2024-25. He was limited to only 54 games over that span for the Metropolitan Division club, where he recorded two goals, seven points, 53 hits, and a minus-3 rating.
Nieto also played in 15 AHL games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins during the 2024-25 season, posting three goals, four assists, seven points, and a plus-2 rating.
In 705 career NHL games over 12 seasons split between the San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche, and Penguins, Nieto recorded 87 goals, 119 assists, and 206 points. He also posted eight goals and 21 points in 62 career NHL playoff games.
Overall, Nieto had a solid career as a depth forward in the NHL.
