Former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Derick Brassard is joining one of their division rivals. 

According to The Athletic's Vince Z. Mercogliano, Brassard has been hired by the New York Rangers as a player development assistant. 

Seeing the Rangers hire Brassard is not necessarily surprising. The 38-year-old is somebody the Rangers organization knows well, as he spent four years there as a player from 2012-13 to 2015-16.

Brassard was also a very important part of the Rangers' forward group over that span, posting 69 goals and 174 points in 254 games. This included him recording a career-high 60 points in 80 games with the Rangers during the 2014-15 season. 

Brassard certainly has the potential to be a solid player development assistant for the Rangers. Keep in mind, he played 16 seasons and 1,013 games in the NHL. 

Brassard spent parts of two seasons with the Penguins from 2017-18 to 2018-19. In 54 games with the Penguins over that span, he posted 12 goals, 11 assists, and 23 points. His time with Pittsburgh ended when he was traded to the Florida Panthers during the 2018-19 campaign.
