According to the New York Post's Mollie Walker, the New York Rangers have signed former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Conor Sheary to a professional tryout (PTO).
Sheary became an unrestricted free agent (UFA) this summer after he and the Tampa Bay Lightning agreed to mutually terminate his contract. Now, after landing this PTO with the Rangers, he will look to earn a contract for the 2025-26 season from the Blueshirts.
Sheary played in just five NHL games this past season with the Lightning, where he had zero points, two hits, and a minus-2 rating. He primarily spent the 2024-25 campaign in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch, posting 20 goals and 61 points in 59 games.
In 192 games over four seasons and two stints with the Penguins, Sheary recorded 49 goals, 48 assists, 97 points, and a plus-24 rating. He was also a part of the Penguins' 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup championship teams.
It will now be fascinating to see if Sheary ends up impressing during his PTO and getting signed by the Rangers for the season. If he does, he would get the chance to play for former Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan again.
Penguins Prospect Ready To Break Out In Big Way
Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Ville Koivunen undoubtedly left a strong first impression with the NHL club this past season. In eight games with Pittsburgh to finish the year, the 22-year-old forward recorded seven assists. This included ending the season on a five-game point streak, where he recorded six helpers over that span.
