PITTSBURGH – All eyes were on the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers as they battled out in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, but a few former Pittsburgh Penguins stole the show. The Panthers walked away with a 2-1 win and the Stanley Cup, but a former Penguins contributed to each tally.

Early in the opening frame, Evan Rodrigues threw a puck toward the net when Carter Verhaeghe made a perfect deflection on the puck. Verhaeghe’s deflection secured Rodrigues’ team-leading seventh point in the Cup Final round.

Rodrigues finished the Cup Final with four goals and three assists for seven points. Over 24 postseason games, he secured 15 points.

While down 1-0, the Oilers didn’t waste much time finding a tying goal off of a great pass from Cody Ceci. The polarizing blue liner found a loose puck before sending a pass from deep in his zone to the attacking blue line.

Mattias Janmark received the Ceci pass perfectly for a breakaway, burying his fourth goal of the postseason. Janmark scored four goals in the entire 2023-24 season with the Oilers.

Dmitry Kulikov isn’t known for his offense, but his defensive thinking got him on the scoresheet for the game-winning goal. A loose puck around his net was batted away from danger by Kulikov.

While shoved into his net, Kulikov swatted the loose puck to the corner, where Verhaeghe picked it up. Verhaeghe found Sam Reinhart, who took advantage of the room being given to him.

The Panthers went to win their franchise's first Stanley Cup, 31 years after founding.

There were only three goals in Game 7, but each one featured help from a former friend of the Penguins.
