Will this former Penguins defenseman find a new home before the season is here?
Former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Matt Dumba still remains an unrestricted free agent with September almost here.
Dumba still being a free agent comes after he had a tough 2025-26 season with the Penguins. In 11 games for Pittsburgh this past campaign, he posted one goal, three points, 16 hits, and a minus-5 rating.
Dumba was waived by the Penguins back in December and then sent down to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins after the fact. In 27 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, he posted six goals, 20 points, 43 penalty minutes, and a plus-3 rating.
Dumba's time with the Penguins organization officially came to an end before the AHL playoffs, as he mutually terminated his contract with Pittsburgh.
Given how this past season went for Dumba, he may need to settle for a professional tryout (PTO) agreement if he hopes to continue his NHL career. However, the possibility of him signing overseas should not be ruled out if he wants to keep playing.
NHL teams looking for more defensive depth could consider taking a gamble on Dumba with a PTO. It will be interesting to see what happens with the former Penguins defenseman from here.
