A former Pittsburgh Penguins goalie is adding a rare sight in hockey to his resume.

PITTSBURGH – Louis Domingue played one season with the Pittsburgh Penguins but nearly put his name in franchise lore thanks to his stint in the 2022 postseason. As the Penguins third-string goalie, Domingue was forced to replace Casey DeSmith in the second overtime of Game 1 against the New York Rangers.

Domingue went on to win Game 1 in three overtimes, but the Penguins lost the series in seven games. That offseason, Domingue signed with the Rangers as a free agent but has spent almost all of his time with their American Hockey League affiliate.

In a crucial game with the Hartford Wolfpack, Domingue added to his legend in professional hockey by scoring a goalie goal. Up by one goal and needing a win to make it to the Calder Cup Playoffs, Domingue gloved a shot and saw a perfect opportunity.

With a knee down, Domingue dropped the puck into shooting position and sent it the length of the ice. The puck slowly reached the empty Springfield Thunderbirds empty net. Domingue’s goal helped propel the Wolfpack to a win and sealed their spot in the postseason.

One has to wonder if there was a celebratory meal of spicy pork and broccoli after the big win in Hartford.

Ironically, the Thunderbirds are the same team Tristan Jarry notched his goalie goal against when he scored in the 2018-19 season.
