The Pittsburgh Penguins will see a familiar face when they take on the Bruins.
PITTSBURGH — With just three games left in their season, the Pittsburgh Penguins are still trying to earn a postseason spot. They pulled out an overtime win despite blowing a two-goal lead against the Detroit Red Wings, getting a desperately needed two points. The win catapulted the Penguins temporarily back into a playoff position. A victory against their next opponent could put them in pole position for earning a wild card spot or better. Here's what to watch for as the Penguins take on the mighty Boston Bruins.
Coming off of one of the most polarizing games in his first season in Pittsburgh, Erik Karlsson figures to be the center of attention for this contest. The future Hall of Famer will skate in his 1000th NHL game, becoming the 398th player and 68th defenseman to achieve the illustrious mark.
Karlsson's career has been beyond impressive, and he's already solidified a spot as one of the premier defenders of the 2000's. Through 999 games, Karlsson has the ninth highest point total among defensemen in NHL history with 813 points.
On the season, Karlsson's defense has unsurprisingly been lacking, but his offensive skillset is ever present. His game winning goal against Detroit was one of frustration, relief, and incredible skill. Playing in his 1000th game, Karlsson is looking to have another big day and help the Penguins earn two critical points.
Danton Heinen played two seasons in Pittsburgh between 2021 and 2023 scoring 18 and eight goals respectively during his tenure. After the 2023 season, Heinen returned to the team that drafted him.
Coming off of a down season, Heinen was a low-risk addition for the cap-strapped Bruins. He's paid off in Boston this season, resurrecting his game and solidifying a hole in their lineup.
Heinen's slotted in on the top line, skating with Pavel Zacha and superstar David Pastrnak. He's turned that into 16 goals and 35 points in what might be the best season of his career. Look for Heinen to make his former team pay in this heated matchup.
Three point games are becoming par for the course for Sidney Crosby, as he continues piling up points in pursuit of the playoffs. He registered a goal and two assists against the Red Wings, and doing so brought him into historic company.
The performance raised his career point total to 1,591 points, pushing him solely into 10th place on the all-time NHL scoring list. In just 1,253 games, Crosby became the first player in nearly two decades to enter this coveted list. Perhaps as a good omen, he also pushed former Boston Bruins great Phil Esposito out of the top 10 with his 1591st point. Next up on the all-time scoring list is Joe Sakic and Le Magnifique himself, Mario Lemieux.
The Penguins welcome the Bruins to PPG Paints Arena for a special 8:00 p.m. face-off.
