The greatest goalie in Pittsburgh Penguins history is set for a pretty memorable night for himself.
Marc-Andre Fleury hasn’t played a game for the Pittsburgh Penguins in over six seasons, yet he is still one of the most loved figures in franchise history.
Fans were upset when he didn’t play in what could have been his final game in Pittsburgh, but the former Penguins netminder is set to make quite a bit of history.
The Minnesota Wild are set to take on the Winnipeg Jets in what is slated to be Fleury’s 1,000th game in the NHL.
It’s tough reaching that many games as a player, but even harder as a goalie considering the number of nights off.
At 38-years-old, Fleury is still at the top of his game and deserving of such an achievement and will be just the fourth goalie in NHL history to reach the milestone.
While playing in 1,000 games is impressive as it is, Fleury also has a chance to add to the history making.
If he can backstop the Wild to a win, it will be his 551st career victory, tying him with Patrick Roy for second most all time.
Heading into the 2023-24 season, it was well known it would be an important year for Fleury with those two milestones within reach, but it just so happens they could be tackled in the same game.
In 999 career games, Fleury has reached a 550-320-93 record with 73 shutouts, a 2.59 goals against average, and .912 save percentage.
A three-time Stanley Cup winner with the Penguins, Fleury is a sure shot Hall of Famer that his former teammates are still amped to see the success he’s having.
“It’s pretty much unheard of for a goalie to reach 1,000,” Sidney Crosby said. “Pretty amazing what he’s been able to do.”
