One of the Pittsburgh Penguins' all-time greats is likely to find a new team by the trade deadline.
PITTSBURGH – One of the most popular players in Pittsburgh Penguins history is likely heading to the trade market yet again. At the age of 39 and likely playing his final year in the NHL, the Minnesota Wild could be looking to sell Marc-Andre Fleury at the trade deadline.
Wild general manager Bill Guerin said at the moment Fleury isn’t available, but if things go south, there is belief the future Hall of Fame netminder could be on the move. According to Pierre LeBrun of the Athletic, the Wild will likely look for a move if they don’t make a push for the postseason.
Fleury has been in the news quite a bit this season as the 39-year-old entered the year chasing down some significant milestones. Over his 22 games played in the 2023-24 season, Fleury has surpassed 1,000 games played and most recently notched the second most wins in NHL history with 552.
With both of those milestones in the rearview, and the second half of the season upon us, the Wild are eight points out of a playoff spot, and could be sellers at the trade deadline. Fleury being among those names to be sold will likely re-ignite the conversations of a Penguins reunion.
The fans still love him and showed that passion when the Wild visited the Penguins in December. Fleury may be 39 and still playing at a solid level, but the Penguins are likely staying away from the goalie market this year as both Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic are massive pieces to the team’s success.
LeBrun noted Kyle Dubas targeted Fleury during his time as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. While the trade never took place, Fleury was warm to the idea. If Dubas still has Fleury on his radar, there is little doubt that he would deny a move to Pittsburgh. A reunion is unlikely, but as usual, the connections are there.
The Wild will have some decisions to make regarding the future Hall of Famer and Penguins’ all-time great. It’s likely those decisions get made quickly considering the Wild’s spot in the race.
