Radim Zohorna has been placed on waivers by the Pittsburgh Penguins after a tough few games.
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have placed forward Radim Zohorna on waivers. Zohorna has struggled quite a bit in his most recent run in the Penguins lineup, and this could be the first step in sending him back to the American Hockey League.
Zohorna has played 31 games with the Penguins this season with four goals and three assists for seven total points. He’s averaging 10:04 of ice time per game, but his total time on ice per game has been declining over the last few weeks.
Placing Zohorna on waivers does not mean he will be leaving the NHL lineup quite yet. If he clears and no other teams make a claim, the Penguins will have the ability to freely move him to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
The Penguins have been hampered with a number of injuries, especially around the forward group. Combine long-term injuries to Matt Nieto and Reilly Smith, plus a possibly banged up Noel Acciari, and the door could be opening for key roster hopefuls.
Jesse Puljujarvi is still working through a professional tryout with the WBS Penguins, and recently scored his first goal with the organization. The Penguins are hopeful he can break through and be a useful piece of the depth.
Sam Poulin is riding a four-game goal streak with WBS and is a key name to watch in the Penguins future.
Zohorna hasn't looked worthy of the NHL for quite some time now. No official move to the AHL has been announced, but if he clears waivers, it's possible the Penguins send him and other names down for more worthy players.
