Jaromir Jagr let it be known that the Pittsburgh Penguins is where his heart lies.
PITTSBURGH – Jaromir Jagr is one of the true legends of hockey, more than just an all-time great with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Throughout his professional hockey career, which has spanned over 33 years, Jagr played for nine NHL teams, Omsk Avangard of the KHL and the Kladno Knights, the Czech League team he also owns in his hometown.
While Jagr is still an active player with Kladno at 52, he understands where his professional story started. No matter where Jagr went in his career, he still called Pittsburgh his hockey home.
When asked if he calls Pittsburgh his home, Jagr was frank.
“Yes, I do, and I always did,” Jagr said. “There is no question about it. If you can ask anybody in the world, Czech or in Europe, if you're going to say Jaromir Jagr, they’re going to say Pittsburgh Penguins.”
Jagr spent 11 seasons with the Penguins from 1990 to 2001, where he played 806 games, scored 439 goals, and picked up 640 assists for 1,079 points. Those scoring stats put Jagr fourth in franchise history in those categories.
After leaving the Penguins, Jagr went on to nab career NHL totals that put him in the upper echelon of all-timers.1,733 games, 766 goals, 1,155 assists, and 1,921 points.
Jagr is a sure-shot Hall of Famer, but he needs to hang up the skates and officially call it a professional career.
“The Hall of Fame, maybe it’s going to happen pretty soon. It’s up to somebody else,” Jagr said. “I’m still active player! Don’t forget.”
Jagr calls Pittsburgh his hockey home, and the team is rightfully recognizing his accomplishments. The Penguins are set to retire his number 68 and immortalize him forever as one of the franchise’s all-time greats.
