Kris Letang added to his Hall of Fame resume with a record setting performance in the Pittsburgh Penguins shutout win.
The Pittsburgh Penguins picked up an astounding second period against the New York Islanders scoring six goals to take a 6-0 lead.
Not only did the Penguins record six tallies against one of the best goalies in the NHL, but their core defenseman also notched a record setting five assists.
Kris Letang factored in with an assist on five of the six goals scored setting a franchise record for most assists in a single period.
Five assists pass four in a single frame by Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Ron Stackhouse, and Syl Apps.
Not only did Letang set a franchise record, he also became the first defenseman in NHL history to record five points in a single period and just the second player to ever record five assists in a period.
Letang wasn’t done in the second period, however, as he got the primary assist on Valtteri Puustinen’s first career goal in the third period.
With his sixth assist in the game, Letang tied a franchise record for most helpers in a single contest.
Letang tied Greg Malone, Stackhouse, and Lemieux who did it four times.
Not only does six assists tie the franchise record, but it also tied the NHL record for most assists by a defenseman in one game.
The Penguins have greatly appreciated the kind of work Letang has put in this season, and this was yet another huge night to add to his Hall of Fame resume.
