Could this Penguins defenseman end up signing with the Lightning?
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Ryan Shea still does not have a new contract with July 1 here. If the Penguins do not re-sign him in the next few hours, he will hit the free agent market as a UFA.
If Shea does hit the market, a team in the Atlantic Division should be watched as a potential landing spot.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Lightning have interest in Shea.
"Had a really good year. Heard Lightning really liked him. But they also have their eyes on Werenski and John Carlson, if he doesnt sign in Carolina. Good player," Friedman wrote.
Hearing that the Lightning are interested in Shea is not surprising. They recently traded defenseman Darren Raddysh to the Toronto Maple Leafs and could use another blueliner. If they miss out on top trade candidate Zach Werenski and top UFA John Carlson, Shea would be a good consolation prize for them to bring in.
Shea posted new career highs with six goals, 29 assists, 35 points, and a plus-30 rating in 80 games this past campaign. He was one of the reasons for the Penguins' major step forward last season, and it will be interesting to see if Pittsburgh can keep him around.
