The Penguins should strongly consider making a push for Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro if he tests free agency.

The Pittsburgh Penguins should be looking to strengthen their roster during the off-season. After a strong 2025-26 season that saw them make the playoffs, the Penguins will be looking to build off that for next season.

One of the Penguins' top objectives this summer should be to add another steady defenseman to their roster. When looking at this year's potential free agents, San Jose Sharks blueliner Mario Ferraro stands out as an interesting potential option for the Metropolitan Division club.

At 27 years old, Ferraro would have the potential to be a nice long-term fit on the Penguins' blueline if signed. This is because he is a solid top-four defenseman who can play both sides, throws the body, and kills penalties.

If the Penguins signed Ferraro, he coul slot nicely on their second pairing. Yet, he also would still have the potential to be an impactful addition on their bottom pairing due to his steady all-around play.

Ferraro appeared in 82 games this season with the Sharks, where he recorded seven goals, 16 assists, 23 points, 137 hits, and 150 blocks. With numbers like these, he would have the potential to be a nice pickup for a Penguins club that will be looking for more success in 2026-27.

With Ferraro arguably being the top left-shot defenseman who can hit the market this summer, there is no question that he would be a popular target if he becomes a free agent. It will be interesting to see if the Penguins end up being among the teams that target him this summer from here.
