After some uncertainty surrounding his status, it looks like Pittsburgh Penguins forward prospect Mikhail Ilyin is coming to North America next season after all.
On Saturday, the Penguins and Ilyin agreed to terms on a three-year, entry-level contract that will begin in 2025-26 and run through the end of the 2027-28 season.
Ilyin, 20, spent last season playing with the Severstal Cherepovets of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) - Russia's top professional hockey league - and amassed seven goals and 30 points in 64 games. He is just one of eight teenagers in KHL history to record 30 or more points in a season.
In 150 total games with Severstal over three seasons, Ilyin has 19 goals and 61 points.
Selected in the fifth round (142nd overall) of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, Ilyin finished third in scoring for the Cherepovets and was part of the team's top line, which was one of the premiere combinations in the KHL.
The trio of Ilyin, Daniil Aimurzin (31 goals, 57 points), and Kirill Pilipenko (30 goals, 56 points) combined for 38 goals and 143 points this season for Severstal.
There was some uncertainty surrounding Ilyin's status in terms of coming to North America earlier this month, as there was some talk of him extending with Severstal. Nevertheless, the 6-foot, 180-pound right winger will be a welcome addition to a Penguins' team that is trying to get younger.
