With it now being roughly a month since NHL free agency started, we should see teams start signing remaining UFAs to professional tryout (PTO) agreements. 

The Pittsburgh Penguins could be among the teams that add players to PTOs ahead of training camp. When looking at the current UFAs left, one player who could be interesting for the Penguins to bring in on a PTO is Matt Grzelcyk.

The Penguins know Grzelcyk well, of course, as he has spent the 2024-25 season with them. He proved to be a solid addition to their group, too, as he posted one goal and set career highs with 39 assists and 40 points. Due to his past success in Pittsburgh, there would be no harm in them taking a look at the former Penguin on a PTO.

The Penguins certainly could use more depth on the left side of their blueline, too. They traded Parker Wotherspoon to the Vegas Golden Knights and lost Ryan Shea to the Edmonton Oilers in free agency. With this, it would make sense if they gave Grzelcyk a PTO. 

Grzelcyk appeared in 69 games last season for the Chicago Blackhawks, where he recorded 12 assists and 54 blocks.
