The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that they have signed forward Melvin Fernstrom to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Fernstrom, 19, was selected by the Vancouver Canucks with the 93rd overall pick of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. The Penguins acquired the 6-foot-1 forward in January in the trade that sent Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor to Vancouver.

Fernstrom was the Swedish Hockey League Rookie of the Year this season, where he posted eight goals and 17 points in 48 games with Orebro HK. He also played in 12 games with their junior team this campaign, posting 11 goals and 18 points.

Fernstrom also showed off his offensive potential with Orebro HK's junior team in 2023-24, as he posted 31 goals and 63 points in 45 games.

Overall, Fernstrom undoubtedly has good upside, so it is good that the Penguins have signed him to this entry-level deal. The young forward will now look to continue to trend in the right direction after landing his first contract with the Penguins from here. He certainly has the potential to blossom into an NHL talent later down the road.
