The Pittsburgh Penguins are unsure how sever this new injury for Bryan Rust may be.
The Pittsburgh Penguins suffered their third consecutive loss, this time in regulation to the Tampa Bay Lightning, but they had to finish the game without a key forward.
Bryan Rust was absent from the Penguins bench for the entirety of the third period.
Following the loss, head coach Mike Sullivan confirmed that Rust was being evaluated with an upper-body injury.
Rust dealing with an injury is a tough break considering he’s having an outstanding bounce back season and recently missed a handful of games with a lower-body injury.
In total, Rust only played 12:03 against the Lightning in 17 shifts and one shot on goal.
Through the 2023-24 season, Rust has appeared in 22 games recording a clean 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points.
If Rust is going to miss time, he will join a few other Penguins who are also already on the shelf.
Rickard Rakell and Chad Ruwhedel have been absent for a couple of weeks, Matt Nieto was recently moved to injured reserve, Noel Acciari is traveling with the team but isn’t expected to play on the road trip, and P.O. Joseph was recently sent to the AHL for a conditioning stint.
The Penguins are banged up big time and can’t afford to keep losing key NHL level players.
