The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled their top goalie prospect to the NHL roster.

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled goalie Joel Blomqvist from the American Hockey League. The Penguins made the announcement prior to their contest against the New Jersey Devils. This move may be a precaution thanks to the Penguins goalie situation earlier in the week.

Alex Nedeljkovic was given his fifth straight start in goal for against the New York Rangers, but it was out of necessity. Tristan Jarry was initially announced as the starter, but was a last-second scratch.

Multiple Penguins were scratched due to an illness and that included Jarry. With Blomqvits joining the NHL roster, it’s possible Jarry is still feeling under the weather.

Head coach Mike Sullivan stated that Nedeljkovic will start again for the sixth straight game. Blomqvist is serving as backup while Jarry is still not feeling well.

The Penguins had an emergency backup goalie at the ready in New York in case Nedeljkovic was unable to finish the contest. Nedeljkovic finished and secured a huge two points for the Penguins.

This is Blomqvist’s second recall of the 2023-24 season, after he served as backup earlier in the season.

Along with Blomqvist's recall, the Penguins re-assigned prospect forward Sam Poulin. The top prospects played in three games with no points and averaged 7:47 of ice time.
