According to a report, the Pittsburgh Penguins may lose their head coach to a division rival.

PITTSBURGH – After missing their second straight postseason and no playoff series wins since 2018, fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins have been calling for some coaching change. Head coach Mike Sullivan is about to begin a new three-year contract, but Penguins fans are still begging for a new face behind the bench.

While Sullivan’s job may not be in jeopardy from the Penguins side of things, a rumor is swirling that he may be leaving Pittsburgh. According to Nick Kypreos in the Toronto Star, Sullivan might be interested in joining a Metropolitan Division rival.

Kypreos writes that he’s hearing a rumor that Sullivan might look to join his friend Tom Fitzgerald with the New Jersey Devils.

“Rumours of Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan leaving Pittsburgh to join close friend Tom Fitzgerald in New Jersey won’t dissipate.”

Sullivan was a young head coach of the Boston Bruins during the 2005-06 season, which was Fitzgerald’s last in the NHL. The two are the same age and share a home state of Massachusetts.

Kyperos went on to state that Sullivan might jump from Pittsburgh to New Jersey, citing a lack of faith in Kyle Dubas at the helm.

“Despite being under contract, it could simply come down to Sullivan’s lack of confidence in GM Dubas’s ability to contend anytime soon.”

Dubas has been president and general manager of the Penguins for one season and people are already speculating that people are losing confidence in him.

Sullivan has been with the Penguins since the 2015-16 season and holds the franchise record for most wins by a head coach. With a new contract about to begin, early indications from local reporters are that Sullivan isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

It is important to note that Kypreos previously reported that Jake Guentzel turned down a contract offer from the Penguins before being traded at the deadline. That report was quickly shot down, and no intense contract talks ever took place between the Penguins and Guentzel.
