A former Pittsburgh Penguins blue liner will sit out for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final.
PITTSBURGH – One of Cody Ceci’s best seasons in his 11-year NHL career happened in 2020-21 with the Pittsburgh Penguins. As a third-pairing defenseman, Ceci was steady for the Penguins and picked up 17 points in 53 games.
Now a member of the Edmonton Oilers, Ceci hasn’t been as solid in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Oilers have reached the Stanley Cup Final, with some help from Ceci at points, but he’s mostly struggled.
Sharing a blue line with Darnell Nurse, the Oilers find themselves down 1-0 in the series to the Florida Panthers and in need of changes. Ahead of Game 2, the Oilers have announced that Ceci will be healthy scratched.
Vincent Desharnais will return to the lineup in favor of Ceci despite being a minus-8 with 12 penalty minutes in 15 playoff games. Desharnais played in 78 games during the regular season and scored a goal with 10 assists.
The Oilers got shut out by the Panthers in Game 1, losing 3-0. Ceci and Nurse were both minus-2.
