The Pittsburgh Penguins are trying to build for their future and are looking to add draft picks.
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins are nearing the end of the road for some of their all-time greats, and their front office recognizes that. About to enter his second year as president and general manager of the Penguins, Kyle Dubas is focusing on building a future in Pittsburgh.
Dubas and the Penguins’ scouting staff are in Buffalo, NY taking in the annual NHL combine, taking a look at some possible draft targets. The Penguins don’t have a first-round selection, but Dubas is looking to add more picks if possible.
"The major focus for us is on right now acquiring as many young players, as many prospects, and as many draft picks as we can to try to infuse the team with really good young talent,” Dubas told NHL.com. “have that stocked up for the future as well and attempt to get us back into contention as quickly as we can.”
When the Penguins dealt Jake Guentzel at the most recent trade deadline, the Penguins got three key prospects in return. Ville Koivunen, Vasili Ponomarev, and Cruz Lucias, who all entered the organization as a top 10 prospect.
That move alone made it clear Dubas is looking for solid prospects to bolster the Penguins for the future. His plan of taking in as many draft picks as possible shows the work that might be done over the next few weeks.
The 2024 NHL Draft is set to take place at the end of June and the Penguins only hold six picks through the seven rounds. If Dubas wants to make moves to the Penguins roster and infuse some youth, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a veteran player moved for draft capital.
