Ty Smith hasn't broken into the Pittsburgh Penguins roster this year and has a chance to represent Team Canada.
Hockey Canada announced their roster for the upcoming 2023 Spengler Cup tournament and Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Ty Smith was among those selected.
Smith still holds a contract with the Penguins but is one of three players heading to Switzerland to play with Team Canada from the American Hockey League.
Despite not playing with the NHL roster this year, Smith has been extremely productive at the AHL level.
In 27 games played, Smith is tied for the lead in scoring on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins with 22 points (4G-18A).
Smith is tied with newcomer Rem Pitlick who has eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points.
Heading into Penguins’ training camp, Smith was in the massive battle for a depth roster spot, but ultimately missed his chance and was sent to the AHL.
In nine games played with the NHL Penguins last season, Smith recorded a goal and three assists for four points.
President and general manager Kyle Dubas said he’s looking for someone to take an opportunity with the third defensive pairing and run with it, and Smith could get a shot come the new year.
The Spengler Cup Tournament kicks off the day after Christmas and wraps on New Year’s Eve.
Smith will be joined on Team Canada by four former Penguins; forward Derek Grant, Colton Sceviour, and Josh Jooris, and defenseman Nathan Beaulieu.
