Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are a huge reason why the Pittsburgh Penguins have had nearly two decades of success.
The Pittsburgh Penguins core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang have had their share of success over the past two decades, but a certain pair are chasing down history.
Better known as the ‘Two Headed Monster,’ Crosby and Malkin have been the main offensive force for the Penguins since they officially became teammates in 2006.
Only one other player has led the team in points over that time, and even then, Crosby tied Jake Guentzel with 84 in 2021-22.
The potent offense from Crosby and Malkin not only helps their own numbers but has also had a huge impact on the Penguins’ overall success.
When those two score in the same game, good things happen; as a matter of fact, Crosby and Malkin are chasing down history in that category.
The Penguins hold a record of 104-10-5 when both Crosby and Malkin contribute with goals in the same game.
104 ties them for fourth most wins in NHL history when a certain duo scores in the same game; it knots them with Goardie Howe and Alex Delvecchio of the Detroit Red Wings (104-18-12).
The only pairs ahead of the Penguins' Two Headed Monster are:
Steve Shutt and Guy Lafleur with the Montreal Canadiens at 117-8-9
Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy with the New York Islanders at 111-20-13
Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull with the Chicago Blackhawks at 110-14-5
Each of the names mentioned have been enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame, and with multiple years remaining in Crosby and Malkin’s careers, it’s safe to say they can keep climbing this list.
It’s also fair to think the current number of 104 could have already been far higher had it not been for a multitude of injuries suffered by both Crosby and Malkin in their careers.
Even with all of those games lost, they are still some of the most consistent and successful players in Penguins’ history.
