The Pittsburgh Penguins are fighting for a playoff spot and they may have their good luck charms.

PITTSBURGH – Evgeni Malkin has been a different player these last few weeks as the Pittsburgh Penguins have finally put themselves back in playoff positioning. Not only has Malkin hit a new level on the ice, but he might be taking huge strides forward thanks to some special fans in the crowd.

For the first time in a number of years, Malkin’s parents are back in the United States and watching their son do everything he can to help the Penguins win.

In the Penguins’ most recent win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, Malkin scored a pair of goals in the second period. Both times television cameras made sure to cut to Malkin’s parents to witness their excitement.

After Malkin’s second goal, cameras caught Malkin’s parents getting emotional over the game their son was having. Malkin’s father pulled out a handkerchief to wipe his eyes and nose, while his mother was seen wiping tears from her eyes.

Malkin’s parents have been in town for two games this year and both times Malkin has potted a pair of goals. Does Malkin play with a little extra energy when his parents are in town?

“Geno’s family means a lot to him,” head coach Mike Sullivan said. “When his parents are in town, I think he clearly wants to be at his best.”

Malkin has been one of the hottest Penguins since his parents made it to Pittsburgh. In six games Malkin has scored six goals and three assists for nine points.

“I don’t think there is any doubt in my mind when his parents are here,” Sullivan said. “I think he’s at his very best. I don’t think there is any question that his parents are a big part of it.”

Malkin says his parents will be around until the end of the regular season and he is hopeful there is a playoff run to stick around for. Thanks to their big win over the Lightning, the Penguins momentarily have a spot in the playoffs. Perhaps Malkin’s parents really are the good luck charm.
