The Pittsburgh Penguins have parted ways with assistant coach Todd Reirden.
PITTSBURGH – The coaching changes continue for the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. The Penguins announced that associate coach Todd Reirden has been relieved of his duties effective immediately.
A lot of talk has been made recently that the Penguins were heading in new directions with their coaching staff, and Reirden is the first name to fall at the NHL level. According to president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas, he and head coach Mike Sullivan have been evaluating the coaching staff and they decided this was the best move for the team.
"We are grateful to Todd for his dedication and commitment to the Penguins over two separate stints with the organization," Dubas said via press release. "Mike Sullivan and I have spent time over the past two weeks evaluating the coaching staff, and although these decisions are never easy, we agree that this change was in the best interest of the team moving forward."
During the 2023-24 season as associate coach, Reirden maned the Penguins power play that finished 30th in the NHL with a 15.27% success rate.
Rumors of a rift between Dubas and Sullivan sprouted, and may have been about loyalty to the assistant coach group in Pittsburgh. The Penguins have not stated the beginning of a search for a replacement.
There was also no update on the status of assistant coach Mike Vellucci.
